The PS3 Yellow light of death, YLOD is perhaps one of the most dreaded errors that the PS3 is capable of producing. While the red light can be fixed through various means and ends, the yellow light is a bit more difficult to tackle. As usual if you are still under warranty then send your console to Sony to be fixed. However if you are not under warranty then there are a few limited options that won’t ruin your day more than it already is.
The Yellow light of death is used by the PS3 to indicate a hardware failure with the consoles motherboard. Unlike specific hardware component related issues, this one is harder to solve. Motherboard issues by nature are not easy to fix as Most of the parts are either part of the board or soldered onto it. Replacement is impossible for most unless you have the equipment, steady hands, and electrical engineering experience.
However, the most common reason for this abysmal light to visit your gaming console is a broken solder. There have been many regulations passed recently pertaining to solders for electronics and some of the more environmentally friendly techniques simply don’t hold up well. That can develop cracks easily and can pull apart from the parts that they are attached to. While technically they still hold the part to the board, the connection to said part has been broken or interrupted.
One way to fix the yellow light of death in this instance is to do something unconventional. Much like the Xbox 360’s red ring of death the yellow light for the PS3 can be resolved by cooking it. The most creative way to do this is to take everything out of your PS3’s box, insert your PS3 with the rear vents facing you, and then attack it with a hot air gun or blow dryer.
You obviously don’t want to use a heat setting hot enough to catch the box on fire but you want to cook the inside of the PS3 by moving the gun back and forth. After you’ve done this for about 10 to 20 minutes, you then take the PS3 and put it under a fan to cool it down. The purpose of doing this is to heat up the solders and turn them into a partially melted state. If all goes well after the PS3 cools down the solders will have reset themselves and the yellow light of death will be gone.
This is just one method out of many so called “homebrewed methods” to fix your PS3. If this doesn’t work, you can also repeat the process for a longer period, but you shouldn’t obsessively try to save it by repeating the process over and over again.
If the method mentioned fails and it still refuses to function properly then you have two choices. Either pay the $150.00 to get your system fixed, or save that $150.00 and fixing it yourself with diy guide.
While the yellow light of death is a severe problem, there are ways around it.
