Normally, you have a red light on the power button which indicates the unit is powered off and it turns yellow when the unit is turned on. That red button turns to yellow then sounds three quick beeps and turns back to red when YLOD hits. The system does not turn on; it just seems to be dead. In many cases the final red light will blink, and that is where the term Red Lights of Death comes from.
Potential Causes of YLOD
Many users also note that their console feels warmer than usual when YLOD occurs, which is a hint that it is being caused by an overheating issue. Many users further note their PS3 fan running more often or sounding noisier than usual before YLOD sets in, which is believed to be an issue with dust collecting inside the side vent.
A wide variety of other causes have been tossed around, though there has been no official word from Sony on what causes YLOD. Some of the more common user theories include blu ray drive failure, hard drive critical error, or ventilation problems. There has even been an idea thrown around that potentially a virus is being spread through the PS3 network.
Ventilation issues are a very likely cause in many cases and often occur when the console is placed with the side vent against the floor.
YLOD Precautions
If you have a PS3 that is not suffering YLOD yet, the following precautions may help prevent it whatever the cause may be:
- Place your console in a well ventilated area apart from other objects.
- Do not let the side fan sit against the floor, wall, or other obstruction.
- Keep the side fans clean and clear of dust accumulation.
